Abandonment is the act of abandoning. To abandon, according to Webster's Dictionary (11th edition), means "to give up to the control or influence of another person or agent." Another definition defines it as "to forsake". When we abandon someone or experience abandonment, an exchange happens. Something, or in our case someone, has been handed over to another one's control.
In Scripture, we see the enemy make his moves on God's people by convincing them to abandon God. In Genesis 3:2-6, Satan convinces Eve to abandon God's Instructions by eating the fruit from the tree of life. In verse six, Eve convinces her husband to eat of the fruit also. What the enemy did not reveal to them is what would happen next. The following verses tell us that the man and Eve immediately saw that they were naked. Other feelings creep in here for the man and Eve that had never existed before - insecurity, vulnerability, and the need to feel guarded and hidden from God's Presence.
The enemy loves abandonment because it opens us up to fear, insecurity, and negativity and closes us off from God's presence. It also closes us off from true love in fear of it happening again. The enemy also loves abandonment because he knows when something else besides God has taken position as our covering. When the man and Eve abandon God's Instruction, it immediately left them open to a new covering. When this happens, there are three things he does not want us to know: (1.) He moved in when our original covering moves out. He sees our vulnerability as vacancy. (2.) He uses our new vulnerability to convince us of things against what God has promised. (3.) Even in our most vulnerable times, we had a Presence. The truth is that you were never alone.
It is easier to convince us of things when we experience the feelings that come with abandonment. Understanding that we serve an Emmanuel - a God Who Is always with us - disarms the enemy of the mental games he wants to play on our self-worth during these times.
With the strength, security, and sanity that we find in God's presence, we can be confident that the abandonment that we once experienced was only due to our dependence on something else other than God, but, in our new revelation, we can choose to be handed over to a new dominion and a new Presence. A new guardianship that will never leave.

The Lord will never leave you or forsake you.
OT: Deuteronomy 31:6
NT: Hebrews 13:5
1. Where in your life have you experienced abandonment?
2. How did it affect your ability to maintain your relationship with God and with people?
3. Knowing that you you are under a dominion that will never leave, how will you use this new revelation to approach future relationships?
Father God, from this point forward, I will hold on to the fact that You have always been here. You will never leave me or place me in a position to be handed over to another dominion. I was once lost under the authority of someone else, but I have found my help, my hope, and my safety in You. My spirit declares You as my ever-present Help in times of trouble, and - most of all - a God Who will never abandon me. It is okay if man walks away because my hope is in You now. It is in Your Name and Your Son Jesus' Name I pray.
Amen.
