Knowing God's Voice

Discover The Three Ways God Speaks to Us

What Does It Mean For God to Speak?

Some people call it prophecy.  Some call it a mental health issue.  Some call it having too much to drink!  Whether it be for marriage, kingship, queenship, safety from dangerous situations, addiction recovery, a calling to ministry, or deliverance from a demonic spirit, for millennia now, people have given testimonies of their experience in hearing the Voice of God.  Hearing the Voice of God means to receive messages either from divine messengers or the Spirit of God.   According to the Bible, God has three ways that He speaks to His People.

The Three Biblical Ways That God Speaks

1. Through His Word (John 1:1)

- First and foremost, God speaks through His Word.  John 1:1 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God."  Psalm 119:105 says, "Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light uno my path."  His Word is our His first line of communication and first reference for validating what He wants us to do.

2. Divine dialogue (Multiple scriptures)

- Divine dialogue is God speaking directly to us.  The man and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Moses, Joshua, Nathan, Solomon, Deborah, Job, Isaiah, Jeremaiah, Hosea, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, Jesus, and many others in the Bible heard verbal messages from God.  And God did not stop with the former and latter prophets; He continued to speak to people after Christ ascended to Heaven and still speaks to people today.  Because we live amongst a real enemy who wants to steal our future, it is important to test every spirit that speaks to you using 1 John 4:1.  It is a blessing when we can serve a God Who has given us tools for reception and tools for rebuke against the enemy.

3. Through dreams and visions (Ezekiel 1:1)

- A good friend of mine is highly prophetic.  She calls me every so often to ask about something that she saw in the spiritual.  While I am able to interpret it, she never ceases to make my skin crawl.  She reminds me that, while it seems like a gift, it can be terrifying.  She sees everything from giant locusts, demonic dogs, and angelic creatures to figures standing behind people with hidden intentions.  The Bible shows us through Nathan, Ezekiel, Mary, Jeremaiah, Pontius Pilate's wife, and the prophet John that God does give revelation through dreams and visions.  People think that the enemy can enter our dreams.  So far, there is no evidence in the Modern Bible, Hebrew Bible, Greek Bible, or the Apocrypha of this happening.  It is important to go to God first when trying to understand what a dream is trying to tell you; secondly, keep a journal next to your bed.  If you are new to dreams and visions, they only increase as you grow in your walk with our Lord.  Next, consult with an experienced and spirit-led individual who has the spiritual gift of interpreting dreams.

Good News and Encouragement

King David said Psalm 85:8, "I will listen to what God the Lord says.  For he will make peace with his people."  Everything in God's Word is ultimately to give us peace.  His Word leads to revelation; revelation leads to truth; truth leads to freedom, and freedom leads to peace.  If you are looking to start hearing the Voice of God, start with His Word.  Let It take root in your mind, heart, and spirit.  Over time, His Presence and Counsel in your life will grow, and you can begin to experience the prophetic Presence of our God.
